The Stone Age, lasting 3.4 million years, witnessed pivotal technological and cultural advancements from stone tool usage to settled communities. The Neolithic era, saw the rise of agriculture and permanent settlements. Our understanding of this era comes from archaeological discoveries and comparisons with contemporary societies.
This immersive workshop offers a captivating insight into Stone Age life, history, art, and practical skills. Students will engage in activities such as cave painting, shelter building, fire lighting, and pottery making, experiencing firsthand the tools and techniques of ancient civilisations.
The school can choose from the list of activities below for a 75-minute session split into three 20-minute workshops.
All Year Groups
These sessions will be guided by an artist and utilises art to convey the spiritual and mystical essence of nature with the use of paint blowing, stick brushes, and charcoal. The images children will create hold significance, representing shamanistic experiences, stories, instructions, and incantations for prosperity.
The workshop is divided in to two parts:
First, students will learn about the history of cave drawing through an artist's presentation showcasing examples and visuals of various cave paintings, drawings, and sculptures throughout different eras. Then, they will create a cave drawing montage using brown sugar paper, charcoal, and chalk to create a series of iconic imagery such as the sun, bison, people, horses, deer, and hand patterns.
In the second part, students will crumple their drawings to make them look old and torn, then affix them under their desks to create their own "caves." They will switch places with other groups to draw nature scenes on the "cave roofs", while listening to nature sounds. This sensory experience engages students and challenges them to draw on the "walls."
Canvases are available at £1.00 per head if needed.
This session incorporates a brief mindfulness exercise to explore how civilisation at stone age saw experience the world around them. The students will explore the creation of a 'Medicine/Spirit Helper' to empower participants with the resilience and vigor of ancient beings like the mighty "Oryx" (beisa antelope).
A practical activity to build a shelter from basic materials which can be conducted outdoors or indoors. Materials used include poles, canvas to represent hides and twine, plastic water bottles (which can be also be used to represent stones).
Students will collect suitable fuel and explore fire starting techniques. Fires can be safely contained in a fire bowl placed on tarmac, if there is no outdoor natural space available.
All necessary materials can be supplied if there is no access to wooded areas.
The students will the opportunity to create and decorate their very own coil pot! We will show examples of pots to the students and the techniques will be demonstrated.
The school can provide the clay, if desired.
