Electricity Workshop for Schools
Build circuits in the classroom to learn about electricity
This electricity workshop for schools covers curriculum-based topics such as voltage, current, resistance, power, insulation, conductivity, series, and parallel circuits. Moreover, students will gain an in-depth understanding of how batteries and generators work.
Format
Primary: 3 sessions x 1 hr 30 mins
(30 participants per session)
Secondary/Higher: 4 sessions x 1 hr 15 mins
(20 participants per session)
Age Groups
Y3 - Y13
Learn How Electricity Generators Work
Students will generate electricity using mini generators and learn about electromagnetism.
Build Circuits on Breadboards
Build series and parallel circuits on breadboards to understand the relationship between voltage and current.
Build a Touch Switch Circuit
Build a touch switch circuit and turn on an LED.
Day Itinerary*
Primary, Secondary and Higher
- Intro - Define and discuss the fundamentals of electricity including, current, voltage, charge, and resistance. Understand the direction of flow of current and electrons in circuits.
- Practical - Generate electricity using mini generators and light LEDs.
- Demo - Introduce students to the components we will be using to build circuits, such as breadboards, resistors, and LEDs.
- Practical - Build a series circuit with a resistor, a battery, an LED, and crocodile leads.
- Practical - Build series and parallel circuits on breadboards and experiment with what happens in each circuit when a bulb is removed.
- Bonus Activity - If there is any time remaining we will build a touch switch light circuit.
* The activities may vary on the day depending on the length of the sessions and the age and ability of the participants.
