Educational School STEM CSI Forensic Science Workshop (KS2 - KS5)

Our "CSI Forensic Science Workshops" are delivered on your school premises, ideally in the school hall, depending upon the year group and number of students involved.  Our school workshops are very popular and as we are a small team with limited availability so, early booking is advisable, particularly during the Spring and Summer terms.

KS2 Forensic Science Workshop Format (Generic)

Full Day Workshop | School Hall / Gym required

Lunch-time can be catered for working around your school timetable.

Morning Session: During the morning session all pupils will be fully engaged in practical, 'hands-on' activities, these will include learning about the processes and applications used at a Crime Scene Investigation including, Fingerprinting using Magnetic Powder and Black Ink.  Additionally, the pupils will be looking at Footwear castings and producing their own footwear markings, analysing their own hair and fibres from their clothing.  The activity on hair analysis is a great introduction to “DNA” and Inclusion and Diversity, which we explore and is always a very engaging and popular session with all pupils.  The last part of this session looks at the collection and preservation of evidence at a Crime Scene and the importance of evidence retrieval and the significant part it plays in a court of law, giving the pupils an insight into the Criminal Justice System, this session is proving very popular with primary schools, as we have certainly found that early intervention is key in primary education.

Afternoon Session: During the afternoon session, all pupils will don a White SOCO (Scene of Crime Officer) suit, gloves, mask and overshoes and then they will be required to apply their newly acquired skill-set learnt from the morning session to their group mock-up Crime Scenes.  All groups will investigate and report their findings with the help of an Incident Report, a Victim Profile and Suspect Profiles and all the authentic forensic resources required to investigate this crime.  In the afternoon session, as a Teacher you will witness first-hand how all the pupils completely engage in this workshop, problem-solving and equally, the workshop encourages your pupils to work independently and in “non-friendship” groups.  Our CSI Workshops are guaranteed to Inspire, Motivate, Engage and Completely Keep Your Pupils On Task all day!

CEOP Online Session

This is optional.

CEOP ONLINE SESSION:  As a CEOP Ambassador for years - our workshops have continued to be developed and this e-Safety session is very popular with Primary Schools and Teachers, as we discuss social media platforms, age restrictions and appropriate content for the young audiences.  Additionally, we are STEM Ambassadors and work closely with schools to promote STEM opportunities.  Our program is delivered using the THINKUKNOW program provided by

CEOP [Child Exploitation Online Protection Agency] and the NCA [National Crime Agency].

Transition Workshops

Excellent for Summer Schools Transition from Year 6 to Year.

The national curriculum (2013) calls for a ‘secure understanding’ of knowledge and concepts of science, stating that ‘insecure [and] superficial understanding’ will hinder progression, specifically identifying ‘key points of transition (between primary and secondary school)’ as a time of high risk. Pulse Education has identified this risk and has noticed a high demand for workshop services between the transitional period of key stage 2 to key stage 3. All schools that engage with the workshops report a significant increase in pupil attainment for scientific subjects. Pulse  Education workshops actively provide an interactive baseline for students to progress into the levels of scientific enquiry expected in key stage 3 studies.

Testimonials

This was a tailored CSI Workshop we delivered in conjunction with the school, what a fantastic day! I wonder what the theme will be next year! “Forensics Day with PulseCSI was an absolutely brilliant day. From start to finish, the pupils were totally engaged in the crime, the CSI training and the application of their newly acquired skills. Basing the day around a ‘crime’ committed on school grounds, CSI Thompson led the pupils through the entire process of a forensic investigation carefully teaching them the skills they would need to solve the ‘crime.’ Fingerprint analysis, hair and fibre techniques and suspect profiles fascinated the pupils who were thrilled to be kitted out in full Forensic kit straight away.

We would like to express our gratitude to Pulse CSI for the forensic science workshop delivered at Longfield Primary School. It was a fantastic real-world taste of the actual work done by CSI agents and scientists. Giving children the opportunity to immerse themselves in their learning, engaging with it at greater depth. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all students and staff. We were very impressed by the friendly and professional manner in which the session was conducted as well as the organisation and the quality of the resources provided. Whilst the workshop itself provided ample opportunity for children to acquire new skills and knowledge, it also had the additional benefit of being a great team-building exercise for all the children.

Year 6 Teachers, Longfield Primary School, Harrow, Middlesex

I would like to thank you again for the wonderful forensic science workshop you ran on Monday to a group of Year 6 students. I am always amazed by the amount of kit you bring – the students are very lucky to learn about and experience first-hand the wide range of techniques you cover. They are engaged from start to finish, but clearly, the highlight is the afternoon session when they dress in their scene of crime white suits, gloves, overshoes and mask to solve the crime scene you prepare for each group. The comments I heard at the end of the day- “wonderful”, “amazing”, “awesome”, ” so cool”- sum up their experience. We look forward to welcoming you back next year!
