The day's activities and presentations includes the following:
Sacrifice!: As pupils enter the hall, they will witness a Maya priest standing behind an altar, where a figure, painted entirely in blue, awaits sacrifice. The priest will then demonstrate how the Ancient Maya conducted their rituals—without the most unsettling details, ensuring a suitable yet captivating experience for children.
Maya Writing: Using traditional materials like bark paper, reed pens, and ink, pupils will have the chance to experiment with the Ancient Maya writing system, discovering how they recorded their language.
Maya Pottery: Pupils will get hands-on with clay, shaping and designing their own Maya-inspired pottery, just as the Ancient Maya did to create their everyday items and ceremonial pieces.
Maya Maths: Introducing pupils to the unusual symbols of the Maya number system, this session challenges them to decipher the values and solve numerical puzzles just like the Maya once did.
In the last session of the day, pupils will explore what became of the Maya after most of their civilisation declined. What lasting impact did they leave behind?
