Gods and Pharaohs

An exciting, hands-on, educational and fun day learning about the Ancient Egyptians. Choose two of three half-day options to make a full day: 1. Gods and hieroglyphs (learn about the gods, learn how to read and write hieroglyphs with games, write on real papyrus, two children dress up as Egyptians) 2. Pyramids (learn about the pyramids, then three activities: build pyramids with authentically shaped blocks, try three replicas of surveying tools used in making the blocks, and make a model of the Great Pyramid to take home) 3. Tutankhamun and other pharaohs (learn about Tutankhamun, see replicas of Tut's and other pharaohs' treasure, make a copy of Tutankhamun's amazing gold dagger)

Ancient Egyptian gods and pharaohs

The day covers the Egyptian gods and pharaohs, with different options giving a different focus.

Day Itinerary*

Learn about gods and hieroglyphs

Learn about gods with paintings and photos; play a name the god gamme with a prize (poster of the pyramids)
In depth hierglyph lesson - how to write and read hieroglyphs, with games and learning how to write your name (correctly - the phonetic way); write on real papyrus paper
Two children dress up as Egyptians with clothes, make up, jewellery and wigs; everyone tries frankincense perfume

Learn about the pyramids

Learn about pyramids from photos and other images
Three small group activities in rotation: build pyramids using blocks of the correct shape, to see how they fitted together; use replicas of Egyptian surveying tools used to make the stone blocks (teaches maths ideas too); make models of a pyramid using card, either from card nets (easier option) or corrugated card.

Learn about Tutankhamun and other pharaohs

Learn about Tutankhamun from photos of his tomb and treasures. Why is he so famous?
Look at replicas of Tut's treasures as well as those of other pharaohs and learn more about Egyptian beliefs
Make a replica of Tutankhamun's amazing gold dagger; this is the main activity with high quality resources and instructions allowing children to make superb copies of this beautiful treasure.

The importance of the pharaoh as absolute ruler, seen in his immense tomb (the pyramid) and his treasures.
Achievements of the Ancient Egyptians
Understanding the immense achievement of building pyramids - the acrhitectural and organisational challenges; hieroglyphs as one of the world's first writing systems
Understanding the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians
Learning about the different gods and their areas of power; how the Egyptians worshipped the gods; the Egyptian belief in the afterlife

The workshop was amazing the children even now cannot stop talking about it. What I personally liked is the way that you brought to life the Egyptians with your artefacts, paintings and writing.
