African Printed Textiles

Introduces the artwork of Yinka Shonibare who uses African print fabric to create his sculptural pieces. The technique consists of printing melted wax on to fabric and then soaking in dyes. When it is dry other colours are then printed over the top. The technique was imported into Africa from Indonesia in 1800s and later mainly by the Dutch. There are many different traditional patterns depicting events, proverbs, important people and nature. Yinka uses his own designs which have important messages relating to
the artworks which explore themes of identity and environmental issues.
