South Korea - Robotics and STEM School Trips

Computing and STEM come alive in this international school trip to Korea

Inspire your learners with a visit to South Korea to bring computer science to life outside the classroom. In a country that has 10% of its workforce automated through robotics, there is no better place to see how developments in technology and engineering are changing lives. A residential field trip to South Korea will allow your students to enjoy more than just computing as they make lifelong memories singing K-Pop, cooking Korean barbecue or reflecting at historic temples and palaces. With time spread equally between academic, cultural and fun, a balanced approach ensures all students will love every minute of their school trip in South Korea.

Academic Highlights

This school trip to Korea really blends physics, chemistry, biology and computer science. An underground, fully automatic farm within a metro station hints at the future of feeding our increasingly urbanised world and will inspire learners curious about biotechnology and chemistry, while robots programmed to do everything from inspection to evacuation to reassure hospital patients will bring a physics perspective - especially the self-balancing jumping super-lightweight balloon robots at the Robot and AI Museum in Seoul. Students interested in engineering can experiment with the concepts surrounding self-driving cars as well as try their hand at managing the buoyancy of submarines and see how ice breakers work alongside other enjoyable practical experiments at Busan's Science Museum, or see how automotive industries have innovated and developed over time on a trip to the Hyundai Motor Studio. Make predictions about the future after seeing research prototypes at Samsung's Innovation Centre to make everyday lives even easier, question T.um's own predictions about future technology, or see the ideas in place at Seoul Smart City where technology is posed to bring change in urban planning and government functions.

Of course, computer science is everywhere on this trip, whether through interactions with robots in industry and everyday life, or seeing some of the latest developments in the field of artificial intelligence. There is also the very real question of ethics, including job replacement and automation, and we can happily suggest pre-departure activities to allow students to approach this with a critical and objective mindset through research and discussion. During and after the trip students may find their viewpoints change however, and a post-trip reflection on whether all the technological ideas they have seen are entirely positive can be very interesting.

Cultural Highlights

Korea really has a very unique culture, and students will be fully immersed on this trip. We'll visit Buddhist temples and historical palaces, enjoy food experiences such Korean BBQ and hotpot, feel the bustle and energy of markets filled with street performances, and even have the opportunity to see what it would be like to study in Korea. We can also add more cultural elements based on your interests to learn more about Korean history including the Korean War, take part in choreographed dancing, record a cover of favourite K-Pop hits, or even take a cooking class to learn how to prepare the tasty dishes that are distinctive to Korea.

Seoul is the energetic and vibrant capital of South Korea and will be the main destination on this trip, with the Robot and AI museum, predictions of a technological future, university research, theme parks and shopping opportunities, and great food and buzzing neighbourhoods.

Busan will offer a contrast with a more relaxed vibe, especially around Haeundae beach where we will be based. In Busan we'll enjoy watching choreographed drone shows, robot dancing and exploring the Science Museum, as well as hike to temples with a view, relax in a huge spa complex and race each other in a gravity luge.

Pohang, famous for its 'space walk' and 'hands of harmony', is also home to the Robo Life museum in the Korea Institute of Robotics and Technology Convergence and makes for an interesting place to visit on the journey from Seoul to Busan.

Transport

It's easy to get to Seoul with many flight options, and if you are booking from the UK this trip is fully ATOL protected. For smaller groups within Korea, it's simple to use the public transport system to get around with your guide, using a coach only occasionally to keep costs lower. With larger groups it is smoother to move around from place to place by coach however.

Accommodation

Depending on your budget and preferences, we can either arrange hotel accommodation with students sharing twin rooms or for a more budget friendly tour, sharing dormitory rooms in hostels (4-6 students per room) with teachers in private rooms.

Cost

An eight day school trip to South Korea covering Seoul, Busan and other destinations costs around £1099 per student, with 30 students and 3 free teacher places. This is subject to availability and may vary by departure date, group size and itinerary. International flights are extra. Please ask for details.
